As Ukraine continues to defend itself against unprovoked and unjustified aggression, securing enduring support from international allies is vital for Ukraine’s victory. In this week’s newsletter, we’re introducing our Special Event at the Xth Lviv Media Forum, focused on strategizing effective communication of Ukraine’s messages abroad and enhancing coordination of these efforts. We’ll also explore Ukrainians’ preferences regarding the country’s governance structure and share insightful updates from our civil society partners. Read this issue to learn more!

Most Ukrainians view elected democracy as the most effective governance model for Ukraine. According to a survey conducted by the Democratic Initiatives Foundation and the Razumkov Center, 42% of citizens believe in the effectiveness of elected democracy, the rule of law, and an independent judiciary. Meanwhile, 23% would choose a combination of democratic procedures and firm leadership, while 19% support the consolidation of power and responsibility under a strong political leader and their party. Regarding responsibility for ensuring the living standards, a majority of 52% assert that both the state and citizens should equally ensure it. Conversely, 21% of respondents believe that citizens themselves should be responsible, while 22% argue that the state has an obligation to ensure a proper living standards for all citizens.

USAID/ENGAGE to Explore Strategies for Communicating Ukraine’s Messages Abroad

From May 16-18, USAID/ENGAGE will support the Xth Lviv Media Forum (LMF). During the first day of X LMF, ENGAGE will host a Special Event titled “Crafting the Message: Amplifying Ukraine’s Voice Abroad.” The event will spotlight lessons learned from international communication efforts, explore key challenges, and discuss potential strategies for broadening the international target audience and coordinating stakeholders when communicating Ukraine’s messages abroad. The event will take place on May 16 from 9:00 to 12:30, and will be broadcast live on ENGAGE and LMF Facebook pages.

Center for Civil Liberties Raises International Awareness of Russia’s War Crimes against Ukraine

On May 7, Oleksandra Matviichuk, the leader of the Center for Civil Liberties, participated in the Forum Europe Afrique 2024, addressing Russia’s war crimes against civilians in temporarily occupied territories, advocating for restoring peace in Ukraine, and drawing attention to the challenges for global democracy posed by the war in Ukraine.

From May 10-12, Oleksandra Matviichuk participated in the World Meeting on Human Fraternity, entitled “Not Alone,” held at Saint Peter’s Square, Vatican City, in the presence of Pope Francis. Ms. Matviichuk highlighted concerning issues including the deportation of Ukrainian children, the detention of nearly 7,000 Ukrainian civilians, and crimes perpetrated against religious figures and religious infrastructure.

USAID/ENGAGE Partners Address Role of Youth in Securing Ukraine’s Future

On May 13, the USAID/ENGAGE partners, GoGlobal and the Ukrainian Leadership Academy, co-organized the WATCH EVENT of the NATO YOUTH SUMMIT 2024, hosted by The Aspen Institute Kyiv. Attendees gained valuable insights from the speech by Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General, and learned more about Ukraine and NATO: their challenges, prospects, and the role of youth in shaping a secure tomorrow. The event also featured Oleksandra Matviichuk, the leader of the Center for Civil Liberties, who addressed the role of youth in Ukraine’s democratic development.

National Interests Advocacy Network “ANTS” Raises Citizens’ Awareness of Ukraine’s European Union Accession

On May 7, the National Interests Advocacy Network “ANTS” in partnership with the Prometheus educational platform, launched online course title “Negotiations on Ukraine’s Accession to the EU.” The course covers topics such as the evolution of European integration goals, EU-Ukraine relations, the adaptation of Ukrainian legislation to EU norms, and practical negotiation tips. The course is tailored for youth and civil society representatives advocating for public interests in the context of European integration and is freely accessible on the Prometheus platform.

The Association of Mothers and Wives of Ukrainian Defenders made a video for Mother’s Day, reminding everyone about honoring Ukraine’s fallen defenders. The organization encourages sharing the video to help more people recognize the importance of a moment of silence, showing respect for those who sacrificed their lives for our country’s peace and security. It’s a way to honor their memory, express gratitude, and acknowledge their sacrifice.
