Shelling of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure has led to mass migration of the population abroad, as well as significant internal displacement within the country. As indicated by a recent study by the International Center for Ukrainian Victory and the Civil Network “OPORA” titled “How Russian Shelling in October 2022 — January 2023 Affected the Migration of the Ukrainian Population”, after shelling on November 15 and 23, the number of departures abroad increased by over 60% compared to the previous day. This trend occurs throughout the entire study period, based on information provided by the telecommunications company “Vodafone Ukraine.”

ENGAGE Partners Seek to Boost Ukraine’s International Visibility Through Voices Abroad Event

From March 22-23, the USAID/ENGAGE team hosted a thematic meeting with partners in Kyiv focused on Ukraine’s voice abroad. Over the course of two days, participants discussed opportunities to enhance Ukraine’s presence in the international information landscape, particularly among countries of the Global South in an effort to develop partnerships to counter Russian propaganda and assist in Ukraine’s recovery efforts.

Ukrainian Women Activists Featured in ‘UP100: Women’s Power’ List

On March 21, the online newspaper “Ukrainska Pravda” released the “UP 100: Women’s Power” list, which honored Ukrainian women whose everyday work contributes to Ukrainian victory. The list of honorees includes representatives from various fields, such as culture, education, science, business, creative industries, fashion, government, politics, sports, and the civil sector.  

Among those recognized are representatives of ENGAGE partner organizations: Oleksandra Matviychuk, head of the Center for Civil Liberties; Daria Kaleniuk, Executive Director of the Anti-Corruption Action Center; and Hanna Novosad, co-founder of SavEd.

Civic Space launches HATA Hub platform for digitalization and promotion of Ukraine’s cultural heritage 

On March 26, our partners Civic Space unveiled the HATA Hub platform, designed to unite artists and cultural activists to preserve Ukraine’s cultural heritage.  

At the first Heritage Tech Meetup organized by HATA Hub, experts discussed successful technology projects aimed to protect Ukrainian cultural heritage during times of war.

«City of Smart» reveals list of essential skills for civilians during wartime 

On March 19, the “City of Smart” released a comprehensive article offering advice to civilians on essential skills to acquire, including first aid, mental health, and information security. In times of war, civilians face new challenges, including learning new life-saving skills. 

The publication also includes information sources and educational centers to acquire new knowledge.

Center of United Actions Discusses Resilience in Communities During Times of War

On March 26, the Center of United Actions presented its research results titled, “Communities of War. Resilient and Capable”. With the support of ISAR Ednannia, authors of the report cover 12 territorial communities in six Ukrainian oblasts (Kyiv, Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Dnipro, and Odesa), providing the answers to the questions: how do territorial communities adapt to wartime, and how to strengthen their resilience further? How to ensure the recovery of the affected communities and further engage citizens?  

The research highlights the most effective practices utilized by local authorities to help territorial communities recover.

What we read

How have smartphones and mobile apps contributed to civic resilience after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine?

The recent study by analysts from the “New Europe” Center titled “Smartphone Resilience: ICT in Ukrainian Civic Response to the Russian full-scale invasion” explores how the utilization of smartphones has evolved into “resilience hubs” for Ukrainians since February 2022. The smartphone has practically incorporated almost all the functionality of civic activity – from an online office to a volunteer hub. 

The authors also explain the digital security aspects and changes in Ukrainians’ attitudes toward data protection and identify the most helpful information resources for Ukrainian citizens during full-scale war.
